The movie was about music legend James Brown — but the villains were played by two rats.
The rodents sent Franky Arriola, 33, of Murray Hill scurrying from the AMC Loews Kips Bay during a Saturday night screening of the biopic on the Godfather of Soul.
“I went to see ‘Get On Up’ — saw half of it and it was great — and then saw two rats run under my chair and I ran so far out of the theater,” Arriola tweeted after leaving the Second Ave. cineplex during the 10:30 p.m. showing.
“The rats … were pretty big,” Arriola told the Daily News Sunday. “They weren’t mice or anything. These were true bona fide New York rats.”
He complained to staff, got a refund and immediately took to Twitter to warn other moviegoers.
“I moved like James Brown when I saw the rodents last night,” he tweeted.
AMC Loews said in a statement Sunday that it was “sorry” about the pest complaint and takes “aggressive, proactive steps to ensure our theatres stay pest free.”
A company official tweeted back to Arriola, “I am very sorry this occurred. I just got off the phone with mgmt. They have called for service and are investigating.”
Moviegoers at the theater Sunday were uneasy about the possibility of sharing a darkened theater with non-paying vermin.
“Someone needs to make sure that the staff cleans the theater thoroughly,” said Ashley Nater, 22, who nonetheless headed into her Sunday night screening of “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
“Rats carry diseases, people could get bitten and get really sick,” Nater added. “It’s just disgusting.”
A theater employee, who would not give her name, said she’s never seen a rat at the cineplex in the two months she’s worked there.
“They have an exterminator every two months to prevent things like rats and bedbugs from coming in,” the employee said. “No one needs to deal with that when they come to the movies.”
That said, Arriola said two staff members at the theater didn’t seem surprised when he griped about his scurrying fellow movie-goers.
“Two of the staff members said this happened all the time — ‘We work here, but we never go to the movies here,’” Arriola said.
The latest city creepy critter alert comes after a bedbug infestation on the N and No. 5 subway lines prompted the MTA to take trains out of service to fumigate them.
