She’s not the kind of girl you’d want to take home to mom.
Authorities in San Francisco say a transient woman known as “Rat Girl” is on the run while breeding and indirectly releasing rats into the surrounding area.
The 43-year-old woman, suspected of having a mental illness, has been on authorities’ radar for years, with one sickening video shot in her hotel room in April 2011 capturing dozens of rodents squirming in and out of piles of dirty clothes and trash.
“I was in that room, it was intense,” Animal Care & Control Captain Denise Bongiovanni told the Daily News Friday. “The rats were burrowing through the walls and entering other apartments.”
Just one month after the video was taken, the city’s Public Health Department announced the extermination of approximately 1,000 rats from the room and surrounding areas.
Disturbingly, wherever “Rat Girl” moves, a trail of creepy-crawlies appears to manifest.
It’s a non-stop cycle, as Bongiovanni described it.
“The rooms become infested and then she moves on to the next place where the same thing happens,” said Bongiovanni. “We could certainly impose punitive measures but that wouldn’t resolve the situation.”
Instead Bongiovanni wants the woman, only identified as Erica J., to receive mental help. Getting her it, however, has proven difficult.
Authorities are currently working to monitor the rat-obsessed lover, who earlier this month was filmed living in a park with at least eight rats among her.
Just like her former apartments, the rats were described as taking over the land there too.
“In those parks they were breeding and burrowing tunnels into the land in between buildings,” said Bongiovanni.
She’s now believed to have new housing in the city, though that hasn’t stopped her from going back to the park to visit her old friends.
“They’d come out to meet her and play with her,” said Bongiovanni.
If this wasn’t enough, Bongiovanni said “Rat Girl’s” situation is not that unusual for the city.
“There are similar cases to this. One very, very similar case,” she said.
